Social Media Content Creators Driving Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Medication
A shadow market for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Investigational Treatment Gaining Popularity Online
The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Followers are urged to message these profiles directly for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.
Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before directing customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an investigational injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.
Medical Experts Express Concerns
Nevertheless, doctors and chemists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering products of uncertain source.
Several professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing price of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Selling the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.
Service Response and Content Elimination
According to the social media company, the platform has taken down problematic content and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The organization stated it was dedicated to keeping the service safe and investing in strengthening compliance measures.
Digital Trading Operations
Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, filled with photos of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at residence.
After moments of entering one group, a seller posted contact information, where most purchases take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.
Item Details and Pricing
Within these groups, messages display black plastic parcels with Royal Mail labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between powder vials, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a injector should last, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Security Measures
A representative for Telegram stated it actively moderated dangerous material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“Individuals are injecting materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not include what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current price rises for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But fake treatments are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
Her staff has previously seen patients injured by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Statement
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly significant medical dangers”.
