Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
